It is a sad reflection of our times that many rural pubs have disappeared, not just in Kent but throughout the country. Marden is one of the largest parishes in the county, but can boast only three public houses within its boundaries - and two of those are in the centre of the village.

More sophisticated living styles, more stringent drink driving laws are two of the most quoted reasons for this decline - but nobody really knows. What is important is to celebrate the ones that have gone, and support those that still remain. This is a small attempt to do so.

Pubs which fall outside the parish are here because I felt it was more important to include those establishments which the people of Marden actually use, rather than be constrained by boundaries drawn up by politicians.

I have gone as far back in time as possible. Of course, as has been pointed out to me, many of the great houses and farms had their brewhouses. There was definitely one at Great Cheveney built around 1630 and in a Plan of 1683 of the estate of Sir Roger Twisden, there lies Sir Thomas Culpepper's House and yard also called The George Inn.

One further point - I have restricted this to public houses - which is why that otherwise excellent establishment the Working Men's Club (on the site of The Poplar) is not included as a Living Pub.

This  project was the masterpiece and brain-chld of former Marden Society Chairman and webmaster of this site, Richard Wells, to whom all credit is due, along with those who helped with the project or supplied information but in particular to Richard Adam, Ian Newton, and Tim Dwyer. And, as always, Phyllis  Highwood and Peggy Skelton's A Wealden Village - Marden has been an invaluable source of reference.

If there are any omissions or mistakes, please let me know - I will be happy to make changes. And, one day, with more webspace (more money!) and a large bag of round tuits,  I shall be adding pictures and information as they come to hand - so if you have anything which you think may be of interest to add please let me know.
