There are in Marden Rainbows for the 5 -7 year olds,
Brownies for 7 - 10 year olds and Guides for ll year olds and over. From the age of 14
they can become Young Leaders. There are Rangers at Cranbrook and another option is
Venture Scouts. The Guide movement offers a wide and varied programme for all ages but
without adult help many of the more adventurous are not offered. It seems a pity in a
village the size of Marden that we cannot have a full Rainbow Unit of fifteen to eighteen
girls, but we need more adults. The time involved in running or helping at a Rainbow Unit
is about one to one and a half hours on the meeting night and the time taken to prepare
for the meeting. The Guide Company is also desperately in need of a Guider and your
Brownie Pack is bursting at the seams since the unfortunate closure of the second. There
is a Brownie Pack at Collier Street which has places available. Many of your children are
missing out of Guiding due to the lack of leaders. I do appreciate that we all run busy
lives but there must be adults, not necessarily parents, in the village who perhaps may
have been in Guiding; or did you enjoy your time as a Brownie or a Guide and would like to
give something back to the movement as either a Guider or a Unit Helper? I do know through
both my daughter and a friend that employers like to see a commitment to Guiding on CVs -
they both think it helped in getting their jobs. There is a training period to become a
Guider; most of which is done while at the Unit, plus an evening training, and two all
day, at weekends, one of which is Basic First Aid. After that Guiders are required to
renew their First Aid every three years and to keep up to date with new ideas. For more information or the waiting lists please ring one of the
numbers above.
