Marden Working Men’s Club

The Working Men’s Club was founded in 1907, and the first president was Lord Cornwallis and the chairman the Rev Johnston.

The first meetings for the club were held in the old school rooms up until after the First World War when an old public house, The Poplar Tree,  was acquired in Albion Road, where we have remained to this day. Many changes have been made to the building over the last few decades to make it into the fine premises we enjoy today. There will be more history of the club made available during our centenary year 2007.

At present we have 660 members, and the latest change to our rules has allowed ladies to become full members with voting rites for the first time at the AGM on 11th April. We are always looking for more members and we plan to hold an Open Day on Saturday 23rd April to afford non-members the chance to come along and enjoy our facilities with the option of membership.

Some of the things we have to offer are as follows:

Two full size Snooker/Billiard table, one Pool table, Dartboards, Cribbage and Chess. On Thursday evenings there is a Bingo session, and regularly on a Saturday evening there is free entertainment provided for members. Our biggest attraction throughout the week of course is the cheap drinks available from our well stocked bar.

The club is open 12 midday to 2pm & 5.30 to 11pm on Monday to Friday. Saturdays 11am to 11pm. Sundays 12 midday to 3pm & 7 to 10.30 pm.

Mid week lunchtimes gives the opportunity to purchase cheap simple snacks and there is also a snack menu available on Friday and Saturday evenings.

Membership to Marden Club also allows you entry into any other local club affiliated to the Kent Association

The Working Men’s Club also owns the freehold of the bowling green, although the Bowls Club itself has its own committee and finances. The Bowls Club will also be open on April 23rd, as they also are keen to attract new members for the summer season. You will be able to try your hand at short mat bowls in the pavilion and if the weather is good the outdoor green may be available for play.
